We owe it to children to keep their hearts beating

Our story
Brave Heart was founded in November 2003 by families touched by CHD. Since the very beginning, we’ve been affiliated with the Children’s Heart Center (CHC) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). In January 2020, Brave Heart was officially incorporated as a Lebanese non-profit organization, while maintaining its affiliation with AUBMC.

Our mission
All children suffering from CHD deserve access to the best medical treatment available. They deserve the chance to grow up and lead healthy lives. That’s why, since 2003, we’ve remained true to our mission: ‘no child should die of heart disease because of a lack of funds’.

Our goals
We aim, first and foremost, to support underprivileged families in Lebanon by covering the costs of medical expenses and surgeries for children suffering from CHD. All families who qualify for financial aid at the AUBMC Social Services Office can benefit from our support.

We also ensure that our brave little heroes have access to the best medical care available in Lebanon, which is why we’ve chosen to partner with the Children’s Heart Center (CHC). With a surgical success rate of 98%, the CHC is the most comprehensive pediatric cardiac center in Lebanon and has achieved regional and worldwide recognition.

Brave Heart also works to increase awareness about CHD in Lebanon, ensuring everyone has the chance to help a child in need, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, or religious affiliation. Our awareness programs have encouraged the early detection and timely treatment of CHD while educating the public about the disease and ending taboos related to heart defects in children.

What is CHD?
Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) is the abnormal development of the heart, which results in the child being born with a heart defect. At least 35 types of defects are recognized, ranging from simple to complex malformations. This disease can be very serious, as nearly twice as many children die from CHD each year as from all forms of childhood cancers combined. However, with appropriate resources and treatment options, children born with CHD can be treated and lead normal and healthy lives.

Every 12 hours in Lebanon, a baby is born with a heart defect. This means that 700 newborns are diagnosed with CHD yearly, with more than 450 requiring treatment. Unfortunately, approximately 80% of families are currently unable to afford life-saving heart surgery for their children. For this reason, over the last 21 years, Brave Heart has time and again stood by the side of these families, supporting them in saving the lives of their children.

Our impact
Since its foundation, Brave Heart has spent an average of USD 7,500 per procedure to treat more than 4,700 children.

As the first patient fund in the country dedicated to pediatric cardiac care, Brave Heart has succeeded in making a difference in the lives of over 14,000 children. We’ve funded more than 4,700 cardiac surgeries and provided financial aid for over 9,500 diagnostic tests, cardiac imaging, and electrocardiograms (ECG).

We continue to ensure that 100% of all donations are used to cover the surgeries and medical expenses of children.

In the past ten years, Brave Heart has covered a yearly average of 250 surgeries and interventional procedures.

With your support, we can continue saving and changing lives.
